INTRODUCTION

   

From 2007 on, windbelts have been seen in the area of testing and prototyping to generate sustainable (electrical) energy.

Windbelts are very simple devices that require almost no maintenance.

 

Windbelts use a tensioned belt that converts wind energy to movement at an attached magnet which is positioned close to a copper coil that gererates electricity due to the changes in the magnetic field.

 

Windbelts can be attached to almost any structure.

Windbelts produce an average power of 10 to 100 milliWatt each.

Windbelts can easily be stacked together to get higher power ratings.

Windbelts operate at windspeeds from 1.5 meters / second.

Windbelts are very unfamiliar to the public.

There are no ready-made products available.

GOAL 

We will design and produce cheap, small windbelts to charge your mobile equipment anywhere to be sold starting september 2016 worldwide via our webshop

 

THEORY  

     

The windbelt's theory is based on two individually used widely spread scientific principles:

  1. Generate electrical energy by moving a magnet through a coil. 
  2. Get an object under tension into a harmonic swing, like a guitar string or the 'swinging' bridge in the above picture.

Although there are differences in the actual design of the wind belt, the theory is always the same.

 

HISTORY

The history of windbelts dates from around 2006/2007 when students at several countries made energy solutions for hard to reach places like the outback, mountains and so on.

 

In Germany a student by the name of  Marko Müller Marko Müller developed an award-winning "wine belt ' in 2011 to be used in German vineyards. A multi Wind Belt setup gives a lot of power. However, after graduation nothing seems to be done with the beautiful designs and prototypes.  Marko replied to me that it was a one time design challange and that was it. 

About the same goes for the first Windbelt designer Shawn Frayne . He thougt the whole idea. It was then developed into a usable product, but the commercial roll-out was not taken by other parties.

I contacted Shawn March 2016 to try and get a joint development started in my country for windbelts that could potentially power light posts in the countryside.

I was glad that Shawn replied almost immediately, but the answer was that he moved on into other new developments because the Wind Belt was developed enough to be rolled out by others. 

That's unfortunate, but his Humdinger  site and its knowledge is still there. 

 

TODAY

If you would however like to get production windbelts up and running, you will need a more profound knowledge of testing that was done by others than is presently available.

So ... we'll do it yourself using all available material both from theory, publications, etc. and we will start our own developments to begin production as soon as possible.

 

We will get the first 100 windbelts available from September 2016.  

These first 100 windbelts will be in a version of 1 meters each with a rated output at average wind speed of at least 100 milliWatt for a market price of less than 100 Euros each.

In addition to the ready-made product, a Do It Yourself evaluation kit will be available to purchase from our website, estimated to be available by the end of June 2016.

In the kit you will find two coils, four magnets, one piece of foil and the necessary nuts and bolts plus electronics such as a rectifier, electrolytic capacitors, LEDs and wiring to charge a micro-USB connected device. Brazing or soldering skills are not required. A straight tube of 50 cm cardboard, wood or other straight solid material will be required from the buyer together with a small screwdriver and a set of small pliers in order to get the kit up and running.
